[Feat] Simplify creating and deploying applications - #1288
Getting an application running used to take several dialogs and manual steps. Now you pick a repository and a server, click Deploy, and Vito handles the rest.
What changed
One screen to create an application, with everything else under Advanced
Detects the branch, runtime and PHP/Node version from the repository
Creates the database if you want one, and starts the first deploy by itself
Laravel gets a generated APP_KEY, and Vite assets now build on deploy
Deploy on push is on by default for new applications
Application domains can use a domain from the Domains page, so Vito creates the DNS record and verifies it
Bug fixes
Fresh servers returned 502 on the first PHP deploy, because PHP-FPM wasn't restarted after its user changed
Deleting a DNS record reported success even when the provider refused it
Tested
Ran the full flow on 5 Ubuntu VMs: Laravel across two web servers with a load balancer, MariaDB, Redis, a worker and a scheduler, plus Node and static apps and the failure and retry paths. DNS records and domain verification ran against a local fake Cloudflare API, not a real account, and HTTPS wasn't tested because the VMs have private addresses.
Known issue
With several web servers, each one builds its own assets. If the file hashes differ, a page can lose its CSS behind a load balancer. Laravel's default app.css can trigger this because it scans storage/framework/views.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Application setup can detect a repository’s runtime and compatible versions, then guide you through choosing a server, configuring a database and creating an environment. Applications can also be created without a server.
Applications can deploy automatically when setup is ready, with notices for first deployments and webhook failures.
Add domains managed by a DNS provider; matching records are created and verified automatically, while conflicting records are left untouched.
Runtime setup can include suggested environment variables, creation options, database recommendations and additional tools.
Improvements
Laravel builds install JavaScript dependencies only when a package.json is present, using lockfiles when available.
DNS record listings now support multiple pages, and already-removed records are handled as successful deletions.
Application and component forms provide clearer setup options and validation feedback.
Pick a repository and a server, click Deploy, and Vito detects the runtime,
sets up the component and database, and starts the first deploy by itself.
Application domains can also use a domain from the Domains page, so Vito
creates the DNS record and verifies it automatically.
Also fixes fresh servers returning 502 on the first PHP deploy, because
PHP-FPM wasn't restarted after its user changed.

instructions embedded in them. Verify each finding against current code. Fix
only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes

Stop creating address records from an incomplete record list.

Stop creating address records from an incomplete record list.
In zones with over 100 records, a deletion between page requests shifts the target past the page already read. Clean up provider DNS records left behind when environment domain setup fails.
CreateDNSRecord::create() writes the record to the DNS provider before it saves the local DNSRecord (app/Actions/Domain/CreateDNSRecord.php:25-42). The database transaction in ValidateEnvironmentDomain::run() cannot undo that external write. Two failure paths leave a provider record without a local row:
The local $dnsRecord->save() at line 42 has no guard. When it throws, point() does not catch the exception, because PointDomainAtServer::point() catches only ValidationException. The exception leaves point() before it returns, so the caller has no record and no provider ID.
When the second domain save in CreateEnvironmentDomain::create() or SyncComponentVhost::sync() fails after point() returns, the outer transaction rolls back the local rows. The provider record remains. The host then points to the server without a matching local record.
Compensation must cover both paths:
Keep the provider ID from $recordData['id'] in CreateDNSRecord::create() before the local save. A failure in that save must still allow the provider record to be removed. The caller cannot do this, because the exception prevents point() from returning a record.
Have point() return the newly created DNSRecord, or null when it reuses an existing record. Rollback cleanup in CreateEnvironmentDomain::create() must delete only a newly created record.
Check the boolean result of deleteRecord(). It returns false on failure and does not throw. Report a failed cleanup without replacing the original exception.

Expired DNS lock can let two servers create conflicting A records for one host.
45-45: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Expired DNS lock can let two servers create conflicting A records for one host.
The DNS lock in PointDomainAtServer::point() expires after 60 seconds. ensureRecord() can run longer than that, because syncDnsRecords() pages through the full provider record list before the create call. A second request for the same host on another server can acquire the lock while the first request still runs. Both requests can then see no matching record and create an A record with a different address.
Requests on the same server serialise on the server lock in ValidateEnvironmentDomain::run(). Host uniqueness is checked per server only, so requests on different servers are not serialised by those locks.
Keep the DNS lock held until syncDnsRecords() and the record creation finish. A fixed 60-second expiry does not cover that work.

Each dataset entry should compare the full header value with the value that the provider must send. Build the expected value from the credentials that the factory supplies. Bitbucket uses a Basic value, and BitbucketV2 and GitHub App use a Bearer value.

Stop a DNS record edit or delete from leaving a stale dns_domain_id.
point() locks dns-record-…, but UpdateDNSRecord::update() and DeleteDNSRecord::delete() do not take that lock. An edit or delete that runs after ensureRecord() reads the record, and before CreateEnvironmentDomain::create() saves dns_domain_id, misses the new association. The domain is then saved as DNS-managed for a record that has changed or been removed. Make the writers and the association save use one ordering. Reconcile dns_domain_id after the create transaction commits.

Include non-ready database names when choosing the default name.
defaultName checks only selected.databases, which GetEnvironmentResourceOptions limits to READY databases. CreateDatabase::validate rejects any non-deleted database with the same name on the server, whatever its status. A deferred attach stores the new row as CREATING, so a pending database that holds the suggested name causes a duplicate-name validation error on submit. Return the names of all non-deleted databases per service, and use them in the suffix loop.

Keep the managed link when another address record still points at the server.
Editing an A, AAAA or CNAME record clears dns_domain_id for its host, even when another address record for that host still points at the server. The environment domain then reports dns_managed as false. Clear the link only when no remaining record matches the managed server IP.
Possible approach
The clear should check whether a surviving record still points at the managed server IP before setting dns_domain_id to null. This check needs the server IP from the environment domain's component, so it is not a one-line change in UpdateDNSRecord.

Clear managed DNS links when sync removes their record.
Domain::syncDnsRecords() replaces the local records from the provider but leaves EnvironmentDomain::dns_domain_id set on matching links. The domain still reports dns_managed. The UI then shows automatic verification text and hides the manual DNS record instructions. Clear the link for each host that no longer has a matching A, AAAA, or CNAME record after the sync.

Not changing this, as with the earlier sync finding. It only affects a label on pending domains, and verification still reads real DNS and reports the error.

@saeedvaziry Understood. This is a pending-domain display concern, not a DNS verification failure. I accept your decision to leave it unchanged and won’t pursue this change.
- Return a validation error instead of a 500 for a malformed APP_KEY
- Reject control characters and whitespace in pasted keys
- Validate the DNS domain id and cap version constraints read from repositories
- Throttle repository detection and fall back to manual selection when it fails
- Make the deploy on push warning accurate when re-enabling fails
- Associate the repository and branch labels with their pickers

Clear the auto-detected runtime when branch detection fails.
When detection fails after a branch change, the form keeps the runtime from the previous detection. The picker opens with that runtime still selected, and submitting sends it. Clear the runtime only when the user did not choose it. runtimeChosen persists across branch changes, so an explicit selection remains.
Suggested fix
if (!response.ok) {

setChangingRuntime(true);

In the branch-detection failure path guarded by `!response.ok`, clear the stale
detected runtime and reset the form runtime and capabilities only when
`runtimeChosen.current` is false. Preserve an explicit runtime selection and the
existing `setChangingRuntime(true)` behaviour.
Remove the DNS record when a later step fails after point().
PointDomainAtServer::point() runs inside the transaction that ValidateEnvironmentDomain::run() opens. CreateDNSRecord::create() calls $provider->createRecord() before it saves the local DNSRecord. If a later step fails, the local rows roll back, but the provider record remains. No compensation exists on this path.
The provider record can remain after these failures:
The local DNSRecord save in CreateDNSRecord::create().
The $domain->save() call after point() in CreateEnvironmentDomain::create().
BroadcastEnvironmentDomainUpdate in CreateEnvironmentDomain::create().
The transaction commit.
Delete only a record that this call created. ensureRecord() returns early when a matching record already exists, and that record must stay. Capture the provider record ID inside CreateDNSRecord::create() when it is created. Delete it if a later step fails. A caller cannot see this ID when the local save fails.
Moving the provider write after commit does not fix this on its own. CreateEnvironmentDomain::create() reads $domain->dns_domain_id for the dispatch delay after point(). A provider failure after commit would also leave a saved domain without its DNS record.
As per coding guidelines, a multi-step mutation must not leave partial state. A database rollback cannot undo a provider call.

Update CreateDNSRecord::create() to track the provider record ID only when this
call creates a new record, and delete that record if the local save fails; leave
records returned by the existing-record path untouched. Propagate the
created-record identity or an equivalent cleanup handle through
PointDomainAtServer::point() so CreateEnvironmentDomain::create() can compensate
if the domain save, broadcast, or transaction commit fails, while preserving the
existing transaction and dispatch-delay behaviour.

Not changing this. The likeliest failure, the server config sync, now runs before the DNS call, so it can't leave a record behind. What's left is a local save or commit failing right after the provider call, and retrying reuses that record. Rollback cleanup would add more risk, because deleting DNS automatically can remove something live.

@saeedvaziry Understood. SyncComponentVhost::sync() runs before the DNS call, so a failure there cannot leave a provider record behind.
A later failure can still leave the DNS record, but you have accepted that risk in favour of retry reuse and avoiding automatic deletion. I won’t pursue the rollback-cleanup change.

Follow-up Comments
Stop returning every version when the constraint is truncated.
202-202: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Stop returning every version when the constraint is truncated.
Line 202 cuts the raw constraint to 255 bytes before parsing. If the cut removes every satisfying alternative, line 213 returns all versions. A valid long constraint can then produce suggestions it does not allow. Parse the full constraint, or do not fall back to all versions after truncation.

Update the constraint parsing around `$alternatives` in `AbstractRuntimePreset`
to avoid truncating a valid constraint before parsing; preserve all satisfying
alternatives from the full constraint. If a length limit must remain, ensure
truncation cannot lead to the later fallback returning versions that do not
satisfy the constraint.

Clear detectedKey when detection falls back to the picker.
When detection fails, fallBackToPicker clears the runtime but leaves detectedKey.current at the last successful key. If the user switches back to that branch, the early return at line 103 skips detection. The runtime stays empty and the picker must be used.

Update fallBackToPicker to clear detectedKey.current when detection falls back
to the picker, before the runtimeChosen check, so switching back to that branch
can run detection again instead of reusing a stale key.

Keep the user's capability edits when detection fails.
When the detection request fails, fallBackToPicker clears capabilities for a runtime the user did not choose, so edits made after detection are lost. A successful re-detection for the same runtime keeps those edits, so the two outcomes of the same branch change behave differently. Clear only the stale detected runtime, and keep the user's capability configuration.
Scope of the change
selectRuntime also resets capabilities on every runtime pick. The fix therefore spans the failure fallback and runtime selection, not only the fallback.

Not changing this. If detection fails, the form falls back to the manual runtime picker and can't submit without a runtime, so nothing wrong gets created. It's a safe fallback for a rare case, and I'd rather not add state for it.

@saeedvaziry Understood. The submit button is disabled when the runtime is empty, and the manual runtime picker provides a recovery path. My concern was about lost capability edits and skipped re-detection, not incorrect application creation. I accept your decision to keep this fallback unchanged.
Not changing the constraint truncation follow-up. It needs a version constraint over 255 characters, and the result is only a preselected version, which the form shows and the user can change before deploying.

What changed
APP_KEY, and Vite assets now build on deployBug fixes
Laravel's default
