[Feat] Add Go, Rust and Python application runtimes - #1290
Add Go, Rust, and framework-neutral Python runtime presets for Applications, reusing the existing descriptor-driven UI and provisioning/deployment lifecycle.
Detect repositories and supported version hints while preserving Composer precedence. Install Go and Rust through the existing component-local Mise tooling; reuse Python tooling without changing global runtime versions.
Provide editable build/start defaults for Go binaries, Cargo release builds (respecting lockfiles), and release-local Python virtual environments with requirements or project installs.
Document entrypoint/layout customization, Python framework dependencies, and proxy/PORT requirements. Add detection, provisioning, isolation, and tooling-protection regression coverage.
No new API endpoints, dependencies, migrations, or frontend-specific branches.
CodeRabbit follow-up (15bfcb47a): honor Python requires-python metadata and both Rust TOML toolchain filenames, preserving explicit pin/file precedence. Added regressions for patch exclusions and TOML multiline-string false positives.
Automated verification
528 passed / 2295 assertions across runtime presets, application setup, components, lifecycle, deployment stages, processes, site tooling, and extension-point architecture tests:
PHPStan passes for all nine added/changed production PHP files. Changed executable application-line coverage is 59/59 (100%) across the full PR; the CodeRabbit follow-up is 18/18 (100%).
Bash syntax checks and git diff --check pass.
Independent PHP/Laravel, security, and standards/spec reviews found no blockers.
The wider run including all architecture rules produced 561 passed / 1 failed. The failure is an existing ignored local SwiftVM plugin using the Process facade, outside this patch. No architecture exemptions were added. The local test environment also emits SSH key conversion/libcrypto warnings.
Real Linux verification using swiftvm
Created isolated Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS ARM64 and Debian 13 ARM64 VMs. Both passed smoke tests using the shipped Mise, component shell/environment, release, Supervisor, and Nginx templates:
Two independent versions per runtime under one non-root account, without global Mise configuration: Go 1.27.3/1.26.10, Rust 1.99.1/1.98.1, and Python 3.14.10/3.13.18.
Default builds and starts, expected HTTP responses through Nginx/Supervisor, PORT loading, and non-root process ownership.
Invalid Go code, stale Cargo.lock, and missing Python dependencies fail without disrupting the live release.
Rust lockfile/no-lockfile paths and Python requirements/project-install paths, including dependency isolation between releases.
Second-release activation, process restart, HTTP verification, and rollback to the first release.
Follow-up metadata checks: real pip rejects a requires-python = ">=3.12,<3.14" project under Python 3.14, while detected Python 3.13 installs/runs it. Rust builds/runs with the detected toolchain for both TOML filenames (rust-toolchain and rust-toolchain.toml).
The VMs are stopped and retained locally for inspection. These tests exercise actual server scripts with fixture apps, not a browser-driven dashboard/Git-provider deployment.
Documented limits
The bounded follow-up (cb3f21a3c) rejects malformed numeric suffixes while preserving repeated npm wildcards and common prerelease/build/stability suffixes.
The standard Go/Rust/Python choices select minor series, not exact patches. Strict requirements such as Python ==3.12.4 need a prepared Custom runtime/plugin; exact-patch provisioning is deferred.
TOML hint extraction supports unescaped, single-line quoted values. Escaped/multiline hint interpretation is deferred; ordinary constraints such as requires-python = ">=3.12,<3.14" are supported.
The corresponding two minor CodeRabbit threads have explicit explanations; these capabilities are not claimed implemented.
Manual acceptance
Create an Application backed by a Go, Rust, or Python repository, verify detection and version selection, review its editable build/start commands, and deploy to a disposable server. The app must listen on its assigned PORT; customize the Go package path, Rust binary name, or Python framework entrypoint where needed.

Stop suggesting 3.12 for an exact patch requires-python pin.
satisfies() compares only the minor segment when the tooling version has two segments, so ==3.12.4 matches 3.12. Detection then suggests 3.12, and Mise installs the newest 3.12.x release. When the repository has no requirements.txt, pip install . rejects that interpreter. Exclude the suggestion when the pin is exact, or warn before deployment.

Confirmed the limitation, and documented it explicitly in the Applications guide. The standard Python preset exposes minor series (3.14/3.13/3.12/3.11); both the picker and server-side validation enforce that catalogue. Detection is a best-effort hint, not an exact patch resolver.
Dropping 3.12 here would invoke the existing all-versions fallback and normally preselect 3.14, while returning 3.12.4 would fail supported-version validation. A static creation-form alert is also hidden under Advanced and would not reliably warn before the default automatic deployment.
I’m deferring exact-patch provisioning or a reliably visible detection-warning contract to separate work rather than silently changing the tooling model in this runtime-presets PR. The documentation now calls out ==3.12.4 specifically and directs strict-toolchain projects to a prepared Custom runtime/plugin. Leaving this thread open as a documented limitation for maintainer visibility, not claiming the exact-patch case is fixed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@saeedvaziry Understood. The documented limitation does not fix exact-patch provisioning, but your explanation shows why dropping 3.12 or returning 3.12.4 is not a safe local fix.
This finding remains open for maintainer visibility, as requested. I will not press for a tooling-model change in this PR.
Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for exact-patch provisioning or a warning that is visible before automatic deployment?

Decode TOML escape sequences in tomlString().
tomlString() returns basic-string content without decoding escapes. For requires-python = "\u003e=3.12,<3.14", the returned constraint does not parse, so detection returns every version with 3.14 first. The UI then selects 3.14 by default. Decode basic-string escapes before the value reaches compatibleVersions().

Confirmed that escaped TOML hints are outside this bounded reader, and made that explicit in the Applications guide: it reads unescaped, single-line quoted values; unsupported hint syntax retains the existing all-versions fallback.
I’m deliberately not adding a partial TOML decoder in this PR. json_decode() would fix the reported \u003e example but is not TOML-equivalent (for example, TOML also permits \U0000003e), and would create another misleading subset. Users can write the ordinary requires-python = ">=3.12,<3.14" hint or select a supported runtime version manually.
Full escaped-string interpretation is deferred rather than presented as solved. Leaving this thread open as a documented limitation for maintainer visibility.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@saeedvaziry Understood. Escaped TOML hints remain a known limitation, not a completed fix. I accept the decision to defer full escape decoding rather than add a partial decoder.
The documented alternatives are clear: use an unescaped hint or select the runtime version manually. This thread should remain open for maintainer visibility, as requested.
Would you like me to create a follow-up GitHub issue for full TOML escape support?

Add a test for hyphenated malformed Python constraints.
The new test covers ~=3.12oops, which is rejected. It does not cover ~=3.12-oops. The matcher in satisfies() accepts -oops as a suffix, so ~=3.12-oops narrows the offered Python versions to 3.14, 3.13 and 3.12. Add a case that expects every version to remain. This case fails until the suffix pattern rejects non-version tokens after a hyphen.

Confirmed that the shared matcher accepts this token through its semver-style hyphen suffix. This helper serves Composer/npm as well as Python; arbitrary hyphenated prerelease identifiers are valid npm syntax, so globally rejecting unknown suffix names would regress existing runtime detection. The follow-up already caught and fixed concrete compatibility regressions in repeated npm wildcards and combined suffixes.
I am deferring strict, language-specific Python constraint validation rather than expanding this bounded runtime-presets change into a PEP 440 validator. The matcher is a best-effort suggestion mechanism, not validation of the repository dependency specification; malformed project metadata can still be rejected by pip regardless of which choices are suggested. The ordinary malformed numeric-prefix case is fixed, with 528 passing regression tests and complete changed-line coverage.
Leaving this low-severity edge case open as a follow-up alongside the documented exact-patch and escaped-TOML limitations, rather than claiming strict Python syntax validation is implemented.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@saeedvaziry Understood. My proposed global suffix restriction was too broad for a matcher shared with Composer/npm.
Deferring strict Python constraint validation is reasonable for this PR. Any follow-up should keep Python-specific validation separate from shared suffix matching and preserve the existing Composer/npm cases.
This edge case remains open as a low-severity follow-up, not a completed fix. Would you like me to create a GitHub issue for it?
