Linear: PET-58

Why

Expo SDK 58 is out: React Native 0.86 → 0.88, the iOS 27 SDK, and an Expo Router navigation-core rework. This is a native upgrade, so it needs a new build and store submission and can't ship as an OTA update. Bumping to 1.16.0 gives it a new runtimeVersion (${major}.${minor}), so this JS is never served to 1.15 binaries.

What

Seven commits, one concern each.

Expo SDK 58 + version bump to 1.16.0.

  • Expo 58.0.14, RN 0.88.0 and React 19.3.0, aligned with expo install --fix.
  • Major bumps: gesture-handler 2.32 → 3.3, webview 13 → 14, and @sentry/react-native 7 → 8, pinned to the SDK-validated ~8.28.0.
  • react-native-unistyles 3.3.0 → 3.5.3. This is required: 3.3.0 fails to build on RN 0.88 (ImageProps::tintColor became optional; fixed in 3.5.1).
  • Test tooling: Jest 29 → 30 and jest-expo ~58.
  • pnpm-workspace.yaml: Jest 30 pulls in @parcel/watcher and unrs-resolver, which want install scripts. Both are set to false in allowBuilds, since they ship prebuilt binaries.

Expo Router initialRouteName removal.

  • Authenticated stack: now uses unstable_settings = { anchor: 'index' }, so deep links (e.g. from a notification) still have the home screen underneath.
  • History and leaderboards tabs: the prop is just dropped. Each already declares its default tab first, and all navigation into them uses full hrefs.
  • Unaffected:
    • useNavigation().setOptions / getParent() are still supported.
    • The new iOS 26 transparent-header default doesn't apply, because we set headerStyle.backgroundColor explicitly.

RN 0.88 strict types.

  • Forms (create-account, restore-account, update-nickname): each now has an extracted submitForm handler, so the TextInput submit event is no longer passed to react-hook-form's handleSubmit.
  • posthog.screen: the params are cast, because search params can now be typed as undefined (JSON drops those keys anyway).
  • Prompt.provider.tsx: removed an obsolete @ts-expect-error.

Tests. @shopify/flash-list 2.3 now ships ESM, so it's added to transformIgnorePatterns. The Share, Linking and Platform mocks are updated to the stricter types.

Other deps.

  • Convex packages: convex 1.47, convex-helpers 0.1.128, crons and migrations patches.
  • @convex-dev/expo-push-notifications 0.3.1 → 0.4.2. Its config → logLevel refactor doesn't affect us: we construct PushNotifications with no options, and the methods we call are unchanged.
  • Minor bumps: posthog, lucide, zod, react-hook-form, biome (plus the $schema), testing-library and ts-jest.
  • pnpm: 12.14.0.
  • Cleanup: the stale lucide minimumReleaseAgeExclude is gone.

Convex AI files and skills. Refreshed via convex ai-files update.

pnpm eas script. Runs EAS CLI through pnpm dlx with explicit build approvals for dtrace-provider and protobufjs, so there's no global install and no flags to remember (the same approach as mobileappb2c). Example: pnpm eas build --profile development --platform ios. CI is unaffected, since it gets eas from the Expo GitHub action.

Verification

  • pnpm run lint, pnpm run typecheck and all 40 suites / 380 tests pass.
  • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile is clean and expo-doctor passes 20/20.
  • expo prebuild --clean succeeds:
    • it generates the new iOS SceneDelegate.swift
    • android.enableMinifyInReleaseBuilds=true is now set by default
    • our expo.modules.kotlin keep rule is applied

Dev client builds (EAS development profile): both succeeded. Checked on iPhone 18 Pro (iOS 27) and Android; the app looks and works as before.

Still to do before merge:

  • Android release build with R8 now on by default (production profile or expo run:android --variant release; development and preview are debug builds, so they don't run R8): check for reflection crashes in Convex, Sentry, PostHog, MMKV/Nitro and Unistyles. The fallback is keep rules, or android.enableMinifyInReleaseBuilds: false in expo-build-properties.
  • @gorhom/bottom-sheet 5.2.14 on gesture-handler v3: its declared requirements allow v3, but its last release predates v3. Check the action sheet, the prompt and the home-screen sheet.
  • Smoke test: daily and training puzzles, leaderboard tabs, setOptions header actions, foreground push notifications, petkaapp:// deep links, light/dark theme.

Known and harmless:

Out of scope: on the iPhone Duo (iOS 27 resizable windows / landscape), several screens overflow or sit under the side column. The 1.15 app is believed to be just as affected, so this is tracked separately in PET-59 and doesn't block this PR.

Align deps via expo install --fix, bump unistyles to 3.5.3 (3.3.0 fails to build on RN 0.88), pin Sentry to the SDK-validated ~8.28.0, move test tooling to Jest 30 / jest-expo 58, and deny build scripts for the new @parcel/watcher and unrs-resolver deps.

The authenticated stack uses unstable_settings.anchor so deep links keep index underneath; the tab layouts already declare their default tab first.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates Convex skill instructions, project dependencies and configuration, authenticated route initialization, and form submission wrappers. It also changes a screen-tracking type cast, removes a TypeScript suppression comment, adds an iOS EAS build command, and adjusts test mocks and platform-version assignments.

Changes

Convex skill instructions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update skill guidance and hashes
.agents/skills/convex-*, .claude/skills/convex-*, skills-lock.json
Deployment guidance no longer uses environment fingerprints to resolve an unknown target. Environment verification lists variable names only and prohibits printing secret values. The plugin skill description specifies that it runs only on explicit request. The skill lock records updated hashes.

Dependencies and project configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update dependencies and tool configuration
package.json, biome.json, jest.config.cjs, pnpm-workspace.yaml, CLAUDE.md
The package version and runtime and development dependency versions change. The package adds an EAS command, and the pnpm version and workspace settings change. The Biome schema version and Jest transform exception also change.

App routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Change route initialization settings
src/app/(authenticated)/_layout.tsx, src/app/(authenticated)/history/_layout.tsx, src/app/(authenticated)/leaderboards/_layout.tsx
The authenticated stack exports an anchor setting and removes its explicit initial route. The history and leaderboard tab layouts remove their explicit initial routes.

Form submission

Layer / File(s) Summary
Route form submissions through wrappers
src/app/(authenticated)/update-nickname.tsx, src/app/onboard/create-account.tsx, src/app/onboard/restore-account.tsx
Each screen adds a wrapper that calls React Hook Form’s submit handler without forwarding an event. Nickname input submissions and button presses use the wrapper.

Type and test adjustments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Adjust runtime types and test mocks
src/app/_layout.tsx, src/context/Prompt/Prompt.provider.tsx, src/hooks/*/*.test.ts, src/utils/*.test.ts
The screen-tracking call casts search parameters to a record type, and the prompt provider removes a TypeScript suppression comment. Tests update mocked return values and assign platform versions through a typed alias.

Deployment guidance can mistake the MCP-scoped deployment for a CLI command’s production target, so this documentation risk should be corrected or explicitly accepted before merge.
