[PET-54] Replace private-leaderboard scans with a leaderboardMembers table - #56
Conversation
…table Membership was stored as a `users: Id[]` array inside each leaderboard doc. Arrays can't be indexed from the inside, so "which leaderboards is this user in?" meant reading all 799 private leaderboards and filtering in JS — on every `leaderboards.list` execution and every `markAsSolved`. After PET-53 those two were two-thirds of the remaining DB I/O (~105 MB/day). `leaderboardMembers` is the same relationship as a join table, indexed from both sides: - `by_user` — the user's 1–3 memberships instead of 799 docs - `by_leaderboard_user` — members of a leaderboard for building the ranking Each row carries a running `totalScore`, so the all-time ranking reads member rows instead of collecting every entry; weekly still uses the bounded `recordedAt` range. `list` subscriptions now only re-fire for the user's own leaderboards. create/join/leave/delete/populate and `cleanupUserData` (which was patching all 799 leaderboards per account deletion) maintain the rows. The `users` array is still written but no longer read; it will be dropped once the `backfillLeaderboardMembers` migration (idempotent, sums existing entries) has run in prod. Positions were assigned before members with a deleted account were filtered out, which could leave a gap (e.g. first row showing position 2). Users are now resolved first and ranked from the filtered list, and each user doc goes through `userModel.parse` like every other query result. Linear: PET-54 — part B of PET-53 (#55)
Why
After #55 shipped, the remaining Convex DB I/O is dominated by
markAsSolved(52.9 MB) andleaderboards.list(51.4 MB) — two-thirds of the day's total. Both answer "which private leaderboards is this user in?" by reading all 799 private leaderboards and filteringusers.includes(userId)in JS, because membership lives in an array field that Convex can't index from the inside. ~300–400 KB read per call to keep 1–3 docs. What
leaderboardMemberstable —{ leaderboardId, userId, totalScore }, the same relationship as a join table, indexed from both sides:by_user→ the user's memberships (1–3 docs instead of 799) — used bylist,markAsSolved,cleanupUserDataby_leaderboard_user→ members of a leaderboard for building the ranking, and membership checks on jointotalScoreis a running sum of the member's entries, so the all-time ranking reads member rows instead ofcollect()ing every entry a leaderboard ever had. Weekly still uses the boundedby_leaderboard_recordedAtrange.Maintained by
createPrivateLeaderboard, joinPrivateLeaderboard, leavePrivateLeaderboard, deletePrivateLeaderboard, populateLeaderboardWithExistingRecords(rolls copied entries intototalScore),markAsSolved(increments per solve), andcleanupUserData— which was also patching all 799 leaderboards on every account deletion.Migration
backfillLeaderboardMembers: one row per user in each private leaderboard'susersarray, skipping deleted users, totalScoresummed from existing entries. Idempotent; added torunAllso the deploy workflow runs it.No client changes —
listreturns the sameleaderboardWithScoresModel; the client never readusers.Notes for review
runAllfinishing the backfill (799 docs in batches of 100 — seconds),listreturns empty and amarkAsSolvedin that window writes no private entries. No fallback to the array scan: most users have zero private leaderboards and would trigger it on every solve. Prefer merging away from the 12:00 UTC cron / peak play.usersis still written by create/join/leave (rollback within the window stays consistent) but never read;cleanupUserDatano longer scrubs it. Drop it in a follow-up once the migration has run in prod, same assolvedBy.listnow skips scores whose user doc is gone rather than emittinguser: undefined(the old code had a!there).listwithtype: globalreturns the global leaderboard with empty scores, consistent withreadGlobalLeaderboard; no current client calls it.Verification
pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, pnpm test(380/380)usersarray and everytotalScoreequals the sum of that member's entrieslistalltime/weekly rankings correct for a 3-member leaderboard🤖 Generated with Claude Code
