Description

WEP: #6203

Apps had no hook for post-update bookkeeping, such as refreshing an NSIS DisplayVersion.

Config.OnUpdateApplied(previousVersion) is called once from Init on the first launch after Restart replaced the app. The helper passes the replaced version in a marker file beside the installed app, so it works through open -n on macOS where environment variables do not survive. If the marker cannot be written, the helper restores the old version instead of launching the new one. The callback runs only after the marker is removed, and not when the marker names the running version (the helper restored the old app after a failed launch).

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • WEP (proposal only; no implementation)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • This change requires a documentation update

How Has This Been Tested?

Added tests in helper_test.go and updater_test.go for the marker round trip, the once-only callback, a marker that is not a regular file, and a marker naming the running version.

cd v3 && go test ./pkg/updater/... && go vet ./pkg/updater/... pass on this branch alone; gofmt -l on the changed files is empty.

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux (unit tests only; Fedora Linux 44, amd64, go1.26.x). I did not run a full update end to end on other platforms.

Test Configuration

Fedora Linux 44 Workstation, amd64, GNOME on Wayland. Only the pkg/updater unit tests were run for this change, so no wails doctor output applies.

Checklist:

  • (v2 only) I have updated website/src/pages/changelog.mdx with details of this PR (v3 changelog entries are added automatically)
  • My code follows the general coding style of this project
  • I have performed a self-review of my own code
  • I have commented my code, particularly in hard-to-understand areas
  • I have made corresponding changes to the documentation
  • My changes generate no new warnings
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works
  • New and existing unit tests pass locally with my changes

An entry is added to v3/UNRELEASED_CHANGELOG.md and the updater guide is updated.

This adds public API (a new optional config field, non-breaking), so it follows the WEP process: the proposal is #6203. This PR is its draft reference implementation and stays in draft until the WEP is decided.

The sibling updater PRs have landed (#6201, and the EXDEV fix through #6262); this branch is merged with current master.

The code and this description were written with an AI assistant (Claude). I reviewed the diff and ran the tests listed above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The updater can notify your application on its first launch after replacing an older version. The optional callback runs once for each applied update and receives the version that was replaced, supporting tasks such as refreshing an installer’s registered version. If no callback is configured, the update still completes normally.
  • Documentation
    • The updater guide explains when the callback runs and what version information it provides.

Walkthrough

The updater passes the current version to its helper during restart. After a successful swap, the helper writes that version to a marker. During initialization, the updater consumes the marker and calls the optional OnUpdateApplied callback.

Restart passes the current version to the helper. After a successful swap, the helper writes that version to a marker beside the target before launching the new application. If marker writing fails, it restores the backup. If launching fails, it removes the marker before restoring the backup. Tests cover marker creation, failure handling, and environment cleanup.

Config adds the optional OnUpdateApplied callback. Init consumes the marker once and calls the callback when configured. Tests check one-time delivery and reject markers that are not regular files. The guide and changelog describe the callback.

On startup, the marker is read,
The callback gets the old version instead.
One-time bookkeeping, neatly done,

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Stale marker can trigger a wrong callback if a swap succeeds but the replacement does not report back.

appliedMarker is keyed only by the target path. The marker is written before l.launch(target). It is removed only when launch returns an error.

If launch succeeds but the new app never calls Init (for example, it crashes on startup), the marker stays in os.TempDir(). A later launch then calls OnUpdateApplied with an old version. The OS can also clear the temp dir, which loses the notification. The window is narrow, so this is a low-impact edge case.

Consider storing the new version, or a timestamp, in the marker. Init can then ignore a marker that does not match the running version. Init already knows cfg.CurrentVersion.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Callback runs synchronously inside Init after the lock is released. This is correct.

Unlocking before the callback prevents a deadlock if the callback calls back into Updater. The callback receives the cfg copy, so the code is safe.

Note one behavior. A panic in OnUpdateApplied propagates out of Init, after the periodic loop has started and u.cfg is set. A later Init call then returns ErrAlreadyConfigured. Document that the callback must not panic, or wrap it in recover.

Another local user could pre-create the predictable temp path as a FIFO (hanging Init) or a forged marker; a non-regular marker is now ignored.

v3/pkg/updater/helper.go:202-217
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Rollback when marker persistence fails.

When os.WriteFile fails after the swap, the helper must not launch the replacement. The current branch logs the error and continues to l.launch(target), leaving no durable marker. return 17 is not valid here because that code represents a parent-timeout abort before the swap. Remove the marker and use the existing restore path, returning 15 when restoration succeeds or 16 when it fails.

Without the marker the new version never sees OnUpdateApplied, so its post-update bookkeeping would be skipped.

@coderabbitai Fixed in 5a7c03d: when the applied marker cannot be written after the swap, the helper removes it, restores the backup and returns 15 (16 if the restore fails), the same path as a failed launch, so the new version never runs without its OnUpdateApplied bookkeeping. TestRunHelperSwap_MarkerWriteFails_RestoresBackup covers it.

@AlbinoGeek Confirmed by code inspection. If writing the applied marker fails, the helper attempts to remove the marker and restores the backup. It returns 15, or 16 if restoration fails.

TestRunHelperSwap_MarkerWriteFails_RestoresBackup checks the restored contents and a single launch attempt. This addresses the concern. I did not run the tests.
