Closes #700

Description of Changes

Added a dedicated controller/organization/{id}/config-settings/ endpoint with GET, PUT, and PATCH support. It doesn’t duplicate the Organization CRUD, and multitenancy is handled through ProtectedAPIMixin to prevent cross-organization access. shared_secret remains readable for organization managers, while config settings are not auto-created — GET returns 404 until created via PUT/PATCH. Updated the docs as well.

Walkthrough

Adds an organization-scoped REST endpoint to retrieve and update configuration settings. The response includes the registration flag, shared secret, context, and WHOIS flag. GET returns 404 when settings do not exist. PUT and PATCH can create them. Non-superusers can access settings only for organizations they manage. The change also adds sample API wiring, tests, and REST API documentation.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 11df5

PUT creation should return 201 so API clients can distinguish creation from update. The permission concerns are addressed; the remaining response-status issue is bounded.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 3d602

The endpoint exposes sensitive organization-wide settings. Cross-organization denial and creation-permission checks have supporting tests, but authorization for other user roles remains incompletely verified. First-time creation of configuration variables also risks leaving existing devices unaware of the change.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new PUT/PATCH creation path can persist non-empty organization context without updating existing device checksums. The dependency handler skips newly created settings, while device checksum responses use the stored checksum_db rather than recalculating configuration content. Where these variables control security-relevant configuration, a successful settings write can therefore leave the organization’s devices on the previous configuration until another recomputation occurs. Existing-row context updates have an invalidation path; the underlying creation gap predates this PR but is inherited by its new API contract.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended authority is organization-wide: an authorized caller can read or replace the registration secret, change registration settings, and alter variables consumed by that organization’s devices. Source and tests support organization-scoped behavior for the administrator cases examined, but do not establish the maximum reachable scope for every user role.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Tests assert that an administrator cannot retrieve or update another organization’s existing settings or create settings for an unmanaged organization. They also assert manager secret read/write access and denial of creation without add permission. These are supporting counterexamples to unauthorized access, not complete proof of the external permission stack.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — First-time context creation can separate stored desired settings from device-visible configuration state. Cache expiry alone need not repair this separation because the configuration checksum reader reloads checksum_db rather than recomputing it; a later recomputation trigger is needed.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make first-time context creation participate in post-commit organization-wide checksum recomputation, including when existing devices predate the settings row. Verify recovery after interrupted or repeated first writes so successful persistence does not strand security-relevant configuration changes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the completed checklist, issue reference, and a clear summary of the endpoint behavior, permissions, creation rules, documentation, and testing. It does not include a Screenshot section, but no screenshot appears necessary for this API-only change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #700 requires API access to set and retrieve an organization shared_secret. The PR adds a dedicated organization/{id}/config-settings/ endpoint with GET, PUT, and PATCH support. OrganizationConfigSettingsSerializer exposes shared_secret. The tests cover retrieval, creation, updates, access control, invalid input, and missing settings. Issue #700 permits a separate endpoint, so the existing /user/organization endpoint does not need modification.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The serializer, view, URL, documentation, sample integration, and tests directly support the config-settings API required by issue #700. The reviewed changes do not show an unrelated feature or unrelated behavior change.

Full details: Ui Changes, Regression Test, Docs

Explanation

The pull request adds an API endpoint, serializer, and view without changing an end-user-facing UI, so screenshots are not required. It adds regression tests covering GET, PUT, PATCH, validation, creation, and multitenancy in openwisp_controller/config/tests/test_api.py. It documents the new GET, PUT, and PATCH endpoints and 404/creation behavior in docs/user/rest-api.rst.

Return 201 when PUT or PATCH creates settings.

If settings do not exist, this branch returns an unsaved instance. The inherited update handler saves that instance but returns HTTP 200. Return HTTP 201 for creation, retain 200 for updates, and change the creation test assertion at Line 1250 of openwisp_controller/config/tests/test_api.py. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Based on learnings: “For REST API endpoints that create a new resource, the success response should use HTTP 201 (Created), not 200 (OK).”

Check add permission before creating missing settings.

When settings do not exist, PUT/PATCH return an unsaved instance that RetrieveUpdateAPIView saves as a new row. DjangoModelPermissions requires only change for PUT/PATCH, so a manager without add can create settings for an organization they manage. Check add in the missing-row branch while retaining change for updates.

It looks like this view is reimplementing many things like permission handling and multi-tenancy, which we should already handle in other classes, look at the DRF utilities available in openwisp-utils and openwisp-users.

openwisp_controller/config/api/views.py (1)

171-194: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality

Verify that the permission handling is not duplicated.

A previous reviewer (nemesifier) noted that this view reimplements permission and multi-tenancy logic that openwisp-users and openwisp-utils already provide. The manual organizations_managed filter and the add_ permission check in get_object are such logic. This comment is a duplicate of that thread.

Existing ProtectedAPIMixin permission classes may already cover these checks. If they do not cover the create-on-write case, keep the code and add a comment that explains why.

Restore object-level permission checks.

If a subclass configures object-level permissions, both return paths in get_object() bypass those checks. Call self.check_object_permissions() before returning either object.
