An inviter can now select one friend as their personal proxy, next to the existing "Your personal proxies" group, which spreads traffic across all friends.
lantern-box is pinned to v0.0.184 (lantern-box#393 and #394) and broflake to getlantern/unbounded#489's merge (d3b5e0b); samizdat comes in at #20's merge. freddie from #489 is deployed. Per-friend data only arrives once lantern-cloud#3804 is deployed.
Why
In the Personal Proxies v2 design, the server list shows a row for each friend under "Your personal proxies". Picking a row should send traffic only through that friend: over their direct route when they have one, and over WebRTC rooms otherwise. It must never go through the stranger pool.
Changes
Ticket source (helper):
Parses inviter_tags, so it knows which outbound tag each inviter ticket belongs to.
Adds InviterFor(tag) and InviterTags(), both read from one locked snapshot.
Adds SetOnInviterChange.
A source with no pairings yet still starts its normal non-blocking fetch.
personal-proxy group (vpn): a new url-test group with a reserved tag. It contains the selected friend's direct outbound, if present, and the rooms consumer.
It exists only while a friend is selected and has a member.
It is withdrawn the same way the existing personal-proxies group is.
Ticket narrowing (vpn): while a friend is selected, the rooms consumer gets only that friend's inviter tickets. The consumer restarts when the selection changes, so open WebRTC slots to other friends don't survive.
Selection:
SelectServer("personal-proxy:<outbound_tag>"), or vpn.PersonalProxySelection(tag), or ConnectVPN with that tag while the VPN is off.
Saved as {type, tag} only, never a pairing ID or a name.
A new selection must have a member: the direct outbound, or a ticket for the friend's pairing.
Fallback (backend):
A rotated tag is transparent.
Losing the direct outbound while rooms remain keeps the selection.
Losing the last member (pairing ended, friend offline, or tags changed by a ticket-key rotation) falls back to personal-proxies if it exists, otherwise auto. It also emits {tag, fallback} on GET /helper/personal-proxies/fallback/events (SSE) and Client.PersonalProxyFallbackEvents.
Status:GET /helper/personal-proxies and Client.PersonalProxyStatus return [{tag, direct, rooms, direct_delay_ms}]. The app uses this for each friend's row.
Switching friends is all or nothing. Any failure after the narrowing changes refuses the selection and restores the previous narrowing, group, manual choice and mode, best effort. The one exception is when the tunnel is already closed. The mode switch comes last, so a failed switch out of auto keeps auto's connections. A successful change of friend closes every connection through the group, and picking the same friend again keeps them.
Selection-saved events:GET /server/selection/events (SSE) and Client.SelectionSavedEvents send an empty vpn.SelectionSavedEvent.
When: after every successful save of the selection, once a settings read can see it, and once on every subscribe, connect and reconnect.
It carries no tag and no counter. Readers re-read the selection and order their own reads. The app needs this because ConnectVPN reports connected before it saves the selection, and a live switch reports no status change at all.
clearSelectedIfMissingLocked no longer re-saves an auto selection on every config update.
Redaction:personal-proxy and personal-proxy:<tag> are redacted everywhere personal-proxies and helper tags are. User servers can't use the personal-proxy: prefix.
Stranger and hang safety
The pool can't take friend traffic: lantern-box#393 makes helper consumers rooms-only, so narrowing can't fall back to the pool.
No hang on an unconnected friend: a url-test group with no probe history picks its first member arbitrarily. If it picked a rooms consumer with no connected friend, the dial used to wait until its context ended, and route dials have no deadline. lantern-box#393 now fails those dials at once, so the group falls through to the friend's direct route. TestPersonalProxyGroupDoesNotWaitOnAnUnconnectedConsumer uses lantern-box's real consumer against a discovery server that never offers a peer:
it checks both personal-proxy and personal-proxies across four fresh tunnels;
against the previous lantern-box it failed 5 of 5 runs, each waiting the full 10 s.
Testing
go test -tags standalone -race ./... passed 36/36 in 3 of 3 runs. Without the tag, 35/35 pass, excluding cmd/lantern, which doesn't build on darwin without -tags standalone on main either.
golangci-lint --new-from-rev=origin/main reports 0 issues, and build, vet and gofmt are clean.
New tests cover:
creating and removing the group;
narrowing, and lifting it on deselect;
saving only the tag;
falling back to personal-proxies and then auto when the last member is lost;
a tag that disappears, as after a key rotation;
ignoring inviter_tags when its length is wrong;
reading the snapshot once, and the fetch with no pairings;
failing over from a dead consumer, and from a waiting one.
Each review fix's test fails without its fix.
Risk
Medium. This changes vpn/tunnel.go outbound reconciliation and the selection path in backend/radiance.go, both areas with past regressions (CLAUDE.md, Review focus 1 and 2).
Rooms-only friend before the first ticket fetch: a saved rooms-only friend's dials fail at once until lantern-cloud first answers. That answer reconciles the group, or falls the selection back to personal-proxies or auto. Traffic never goes to a stranger.
Tickets expiring without a fetch: this doesn't trigger a reconcile. The consumer stays in the group with no tickets, and its dials fail at once, until the next answered fetch or config update.
Partial failure in selectPersonalProxyLocked: if creating the group fails after narrowing has started, narrowing stays on, unsaved, until the next sync. It is logged and returned.
url-test data race: lantern-box's race (Remove vs urlTest) is not in the pinned version. It's fixed by lantern-box#394, and it failed an unchanged test here once. Re-pinning picks the fix up.
sing-box-minimal race: concurrent box.Context() calls race on a global. The ticket-change hook adds one more background caller. The tests serialize around it, but the race itself is in sing-box-minimal and isn't fixed here.
Riskiest file:vpn/personal_proxy.go.
How to revert
Revert the merge commit. A saved personal-proxy:<tag> selection then won't match any server, and the existing missing-selection path falls back to auto.

Step back: rounds 5 to 8 kept finding bugs in partial-failure state while switching friends, so I replaced the partial-failure tracking with an all-or-nothing switch.
Fixed:
vpn/personal_proxy.go:144: narrowing didn't stop the consumer taking pool offers. Fixed by pinning lantern-box#393, which makes helper consumers rooms-only.
helper/tickets.go:228: InviterTags never fetched while no pairing was known, so rooms-only friends never appeared in status.
helper/tickets.go:210: InviterFor read tickets and pairings in separate lock sections, so startup could replace a valid saved selection with its fallback.
vpn/personal_proxy.go:56: an unconnected rooms consumer blocked the group's dial. Fixed in lantern-box#393 (a0c64f4) and pinned here, with a regression test that uses the real consumer.
After Copilot's review:
switching friends now closes the previous friend's connections;
a failed consumer restart refuses the switch, with no old-slot consumer left in the new group;
ConnectVPN validates a new friend;
renewed tickets fire the change hook.
Rounds 5 to 11:
all-or-nothing switching (see Step back);
closing every connection through the group on a change of friend, because a connection is recorded under the member chosen before dialing;
a restore that removes the group when the previous friend has no member;
an early return when the selector can't remove the group;
switching mode last;
the selection-saved event, sent with no payload on every subscribe.
Comment verification, required by CLAUDE.md: an independent reviewer flagged 8 problems in round 1, 1 in round 2 and 3 in round 3. All are fixed, and the final check reports no violations.

Fixed:
the restart reads its options and the saved selection under selectionMu;
after a connect or restart, a friend selection the tunnel didn't start on is taken up, or its fallback is committed and announced;
the tunnel's helpers are reconciled before that, so a friend added during a restart isn't dropped;
the inviter-change tests wait for their callbacks.
Parse HelperTickets.inviter_tags (index-aligned with tickets; ignored whole
on a length mismatch) into a tag -> pairing map, and add Source.InviterFor,
InviterTags and SetOnInviterChange so the tunnel can narrow the rooms
consumer to one friend and follow ticket changes.

SelectServer("personal-proxy:<helper tag>") gives the tunnel a url-test group
over that friend's direct outbound and the rooms consumer, narrows the
consumer's inviter tickets to the friend's pairing and restarts it. Moving
the selection elsewhere removes the group and restores every ticket.
The selection persists as its tag and type only. A friend whose last member
goes (pairing ended, offline, tag rotated) falls back to personal-proxies, or
auto without it, with a PersonalProxyFallbackEvent. GET

Walkthrough
The change adds friend-specific personal-proxy selection based on direct routes and inviter-ticket-backed rooms access. It adds selection persistence, restart and fallback handling, status reporting, IPC events, and personal-proxy tag handling across monitoring and redaction.
Changes: Personal proxy selection and reachability
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Inviter ticket state helper/tickets.go, helper/tickets_test.go
Ticket fetches map inviter tags to pairing IDs. The source exposes ticket and tag lookups and calls its registered callback when inviter state changes.
VPN setup and selection now support friend-specific groups with direct and ticket-backed members. The tunnel updates membership and ticket narrowing as selection changes, closes affected connections, and falls back when no members remain.
Backend selection and reconciliation backend/personal_proxy.go, backend/radiance.go, backend/personal_proxy_test.go, backend/radiance_test.go
The backend checks reachability, reports friend status, persists resolved selections, and applies fallback selections. It reconciles ticket changes and preserves valid saved selections during restart.
IPC status and events ipc/client.go, ipc/client_events_mobile.go, ipc/client_events_nonmobile.go, ipc/server.go, ipc/client_mobile_test.go, ipc/helper_test.go
IPC now serves personal-proxy status and streams fallback and selection-saved events. Client subscriptions decode events; selection event streams send an initial event.
Monitoring excludes the personal-proxy group tag from per-outbound entries. Redaction and issue archives recognize personal-proxy tags, and user servers cannot use personal-proxy selection tags.

In a rare failed friend-switch race, the rooms proxy can briefly lack tickets and the manual selection can sit on an arbitrary server until the next sync. The impact is small and self-recovering. The fix is a small change to the restore branch plus one test assertion.

Switching friends swapped the group in place under the selector's selected
tag, so the selector interrupted nothing and connections through the
previous friend's direct outbound stayed open; they are now closed. A
rooms consumer whose restart failed still held slots to the previous
friend but joined the new group, and a retry of the same selection skipped
the restart. Such a consumer is now kept out of the group until a later
selection restarts it, and a selection it leaves with no member is refused
with the previous narrowing restored.

A rooms consumer that fails to restart may still hold slots to the
previous friend, so the selection is refused and the previous narrowing
restored, leaving nothing behind; a retry tries the restart again. This
replaces the stale-consumer marks, which could block every rooms-only
friend for good and made the tunnel withdraw a selection the backend still
counted as live.

The keep list trusted the member a connection was recorded under, which is
the one selected before it dialed: a connection that failed over from the

A switch that failed after restarting the rooms consumers left them
narrowed to the new friend while the previous friend's group stayed
offered, and a later sync rebuilt that group for the new friend without
closing the previous friend's connections. Any failure after the narrowing
now restores the previous narrowing, group, manual choice and mode, so no
half-switched state outlives the call and the close can follow the
narrowing again; groupFriend goes.

A failed first selection from auto had already left auto mode, closing
the flows matched to it; the mode switch now comes last. A restore whose
previous friend had lost every member left the new friend's group
offered; it now removes it. Removing the group stops if the selector
still holds it, so the selector never holds a closed group.

The app mirrors radiance's saved selection, but a connect reported
Connected before it saved the selection, and a select or fallback saved it
with no status change, so a read prompted by either could see the previous
one. SelectionSavedEvent, carrying only a revision, follows every save of
the selected server or auto-select, and streams over
/server/selection/events. SelectServer now selects through the live-tunnel
seam, and the missing-selection check skips auto-select, which it saved a

Leaving this as is. The behaviour predates this PR and applies to every manual selection, not just a friend.
At origin/main:buildOptions puts the smart-routing rules (vpn/boxoptions.go:427-429) ahead of the mode-selector rules (:477-478), with no mode condition. A manually selected Lantern server already has its smart-routing domains sent through those outbounds, which are Lantern's own proxies from the config, never strangers.
This PR: a friend selection uses the same manual-mode rule, so it behaves the same way.
If we want friend selection to override smart routing: that's a product decision about smart routing, and it belongs in its own change.
A ticket-change reconcile waiting on the selection lock could run after
Close returned and, on mobile, overwrite the replacement backend's saved
selection with a fallback. Close now waits out one in flight and turns
later ones away.

SelectServer validated the server, switched the tunnel and then looked the
server up again to save it. A rooms-only friend whose last ticket lapsed in
between was switched to but not saved, with no fallback or event. The
server resolved before the switch is now the one saved.

A direct restart, as an ad-block or smart-routing toggle makes, rebuilt
the tunnel with no initial server, so it came back in auto-select while
settings still named a server or friend, and a friend lost its group and
narrowing. It now starts on the saved selection, or on auto-select when
the manager no longer holds it.

A restart built its options from the saved selection before taking the
VPN client's lock, so a selection saved in between was switched to on the
old tunnel and then lost when the tunnel was rebuilt on the earlier one.
After the rebuild, the restart now applies the saved selection if it
differs. The selection lock is not held across the restart, since a
platform restart may reconnect through this backend.

Windows and root ignore the read-only data dir, as the sibling tests
note; the refused-selection half still runs everywhere.

Unresolved critical races can close a working tunnel before restart fails or route traffic through other friends despite a saved single-friend selection, and notification tests remain vulnerable to scheduling races.

Clear the narrowing when the previous friend has no member.
When the previous friend has no member, restorePersonalProxyLocked keeps that friend in t.personalProxy and removes only the group. The narrowing then stays active without a group. The personalProxy field contract allows narrowing only "while the personal proxy group exists."
This can happen when the previous friend loses its last member before the next sync, and a switch to another friend then fails at the select or mode step. The effects are:
roomTickets() returns only the previous friend's tickets, which can be empty. Rooms consumers restarted on this path then have no usable tickets.
If removing the group moves the manual selection off PersonalProxyTag, the restore calls SelectOutbound on the removed group and adds a restore error.
The narrowing ends only at the next sync or deselect, through withdrawPersonalProxyLocked.
Clear the narrowing in this branch. Do not return early from restorePersonalProxyLocked. An early return skips the manual selection and mode restore that follow. Also choose the manual selection to fall back to, because the removed group cannot be restored. withdrawPersonalProxyLocked changes the mode when it falls back, so the later selectMode(prevMode) must not undo that choice.
Add assert.Empty(t, tun.selectedFriend()) to TestPersonalProxyRestoreRemovesTheGroupWhenThePreviousFriendHasNoMember in vpn/personal_proxy_test.go. This assertion fails on the current code and pins the defect.

A config update between reading the outbounds and the saved selection
could pair a newly saved tag with outbounds that lack it, so a direct
restart failed to build after the old tunnel had closed. The lock is
released before the restart itself, which may reconnect through the
backend.

A tunnel built while the selected friend had no member starts on the
personal proxies group or auto, and if the friend's ticket renewed during
startup nothing fell back, leaving the saved selection on a friend whose
group the tunnel never had. After a connect or restart the backend now
switches the tunnel to the friend, or commits the fallback and emits
PersonalProxyFallbackEvent when the tunnel refuses it. The connect goes
through liveTunnel so tests can drive it, and a withdrawn-during-connect
log line no longer carries the tag.

settleFriendLocked's doc said it reports whether the tunnel carries the tag,
which it does not for a non-friend tag or no tunnel. Helper tags are redacted
by every log sink, so the settle error and the withdrawn tag are logged again.

A restart can rebuild the tunnel from options captured before a friend was
added and selected. Settling before the Connected listener reconciled the
helpers then found no member and permanently fell back from the friend.
The settle now brings the tunnel's helpers in line with the manager first.
Its fallback log leaves out the error, which names the friend's tag.

An inviter can now select one friend as their personal proxy, next to the existing "Your personal proxies" group, which spreads traffic across all friends.
Why
In the Personal Proxies v2 design, the server list shows a row for each friend under "Your personal proxies". Picking a row should send traffic only through that friend: over their direct route when they have one, and over WebRTC rooms otherwise. It must never go through the stranger pool.
