Per-friend live Connected status for the volunteer - #728
The volunteer's app can now show each friend it proxies for (each Personal Proxy pairing) as Connected or Not connected. radiance works this out in memory and serves it at a new GET /helper/live.
lantern-box is pinned to v0.0.184 (lantern-box#393 and #394) and broflake to getlantern/unbounded#489's merge (d3b5e0b); samizdat comes in at #20's merge. freddie from #489 is deployed. Per-friend data only arrives once lantern-cloud#3804 is deployed.
Why
In the Personal Proxies redesign, the volunteer sees "Connected / Not connected" for each friend. Snapshots also carry each connection's pairing, but the app strips it before the globe sees it, so the globe never singles out a friend. To make this work:
lantern-cloud#3804 sends the short IDs grouped by pairing;
lantern-box#393 puts the session's short ID on each direct connection event;
broflake#489 tells the producer which pairing each WebRTC consumer came through.
This PR puts those together.
Changes
helper.LiveTracker (new, in memory only). A friend counts as connected when their pairing moved at least 32 KiB in the last 60 s, with a 15 s linger so the status doesn't flap.
The threshold filters out url-test probes and idle slots.
Bytes are sampled once a second, but only while a connection is open, so the window stays accurate even when the app isn't polling.
The linger starts when the window first dropped below the threshold, not at the next poll.
peer:
Parses pairing_short_id_sets and keeps a short ID → pairing map from the newest grouped set it accepts.
Adds Pairing to ConnectionEvent and to peerBytes[] in the snapshot.
A connection accepted before its pairing's groups arrive is kept, and attributed once they do.
Live tracking is ordered against the session's end (by lock and session generation), so a connection accepted as sharing stops can't stay tracked forever.
Compatibility with older lantern-cloud replicas. A replica that predates #3804 sends a known flat set with no groups, at a revision a newer replica also uses.
At a newer revision, the groups are taken only if their IDs, in order, equal the flat set.
At the revision already applied, groups are still taken if they match the flat set recorded there.
A newer set with no groups that match leaves the previous map in place.
unbounded: sets broflake's OnConnectionChangeInfoFunc and tracks each slot's pairing, with a per-slot byte total that is never reset. peerBytes[].pairing is in the snapshot.
ipc:GET /helper/live returns {"pairings":[{"pairing_id","connected","since"}]}. Neither the request nor the response is traced or logged. The callers are LocalBackend.HelperLive() and ipc.Client.HelperLive(ctx), and lantern-core should poll it alongside the 1 s snapshots.
Privacy
Never written to disk. Pairing data doesn't go into helper-activity.json, settings, or anything else. The tracker lives only in memory.
Never logged. No log line takes a pairing ID. A static test scans every slog call in peer and unbounded to enforce this, and PairingShortIDSet, ConnectionEvent.Pairing and PeerBytes.Pairing are documented as never to be logged.
Never sent to telemetry.
What the volunteer can learn. The volunteer's device can already see a friend's source IP. With this change it can also tie that IP to a named friend and see when the friend is online. That is inherent to showing per-friend status, and it stays on the device.
Testing
go test -race -tags "with_clash_api standalone" ./... passes in every package.
golangci-lint run --new-from-rev=origin/main reports 0 issues, and gofmt and vet are clean.
New tests cover:
grouped-set parsing and the compatibility rule: groups accepted at the same revision when the IDs match, rejected when they don't, and strictly-greater otherwise;
short ID → pairing, including pool and unknown IDs;
tracker threshold, window and linger, including the exact crossing-time case;
the sampler runs only while connections are open;
accept-racing-Stop with a deterministic interleaving;
a stream attributed late, and late attribution leaving a newer pool stream's label alone;
the unbounded info callback carrying the pairing;
no pairing reaching a log.
Each review fix's test fails when its fix is removed.
Already failing on main:
On darwin, cmd/lantern needs -tags standalone, so plain go build ./... fails there.
go vet reports copylocks in unbounded_test.go at lines 72 and 96.
Risk
Medium. This touches the peer connection path and adds a goroutine that runs only while live connections are open.
Riskiest file:peer/peer.go, which adds locking around accept, close and stop.
Late attribution: a stream attributed late only counts traffic from that moment on.
When a pairing drops out: it leaves /helper/live once it is idle with nothing open, so the app should read a missing pairing as Not connected.
No pairing on the Unbounded event:unbounded.ConnectionEvent fires before broflake's info callback, so it carries no pairing. Unbounded globe arcs should use peerBytes[].pairing in the snapshot instead.
How to revert
Revert the merge commit. Nothing is persisted, so there is nothing to migrate.
Reviewed at: f8e3131. Round 6 covered the Copilot fixes (d32fa42..f8e3131). 6207dee after it changes comments only, and the comment reviewer verified it.
Exit: approve
Step back: not needed. Each round found different issues, all in this new code.
Fixed:
helper/live.go:223: traffic was stamped when it was read rather than when it moved, so an idle friend could read as connected after a gap in polling. A sampler now runs while connections are open.
peer/peer.go:1877: a live open could race Stop and leave an orphaned flow holding a pairing ID. Tracking is now serialized with teardown and checks the session generation.
peer/peer.go:1913: a stream accepted before its pairing's groups arrived was never attributed. It is now kept and reconciled.
helper/live.go:284: the linger started at the last expiry rather than at the crossing.
peer/snapshot.go:258: late attribution relabelled an IP whose latest stream was a pool stream. It now relabels only the latest stream.
Comment verification, required by CLAUDE.md: an independent reviewer found 17 problems, 5 of them comments that contradicted the code, plus one on re-review. All are fixed, and the re-review reports none.
Fixed after Copilot's review:
helper/live.go:309: a disconnect is dated at the linger's end, not when it was evaluated (cec72d6).
peer/peer.go:1742: a newer set's groups replace the pairing map only once the inbound has that set (09697a4).
peer/peer.go:1928: a close reports the pairing its stream was attributed to (adc8739).
helper/live.go:295: windows and lingers now age through device sleep. The tracker's clock adds the time the wall clock ran ahead of the monotonic one, so a friend connected just before a sleep reads Not connected on waking, even with nothing open (0c19375).
peer/peer.go:1787: a repeated response with unchanged groups no longer retires the previous groups a rotation's box may still serve (0c19375).
Codex verification r1 (46929cf..0c19375): CODEX GATE: verdict=approve critical=0 important=0 minor=0 preexisting=0 reviewed=11. The commits after it change comments only, and the comment reviewer reports none.
Dismissed:
unbounded/snapshot.go:223: a few trailing broflake chunks after a slot closes can be credited to the wrong pairing. That's a few relay buffers against a 32 KiB / 60 s threshold, and a correct fix needs a broflake API change, because ChunkFunc carries only the slot index. The thread is left open for a human call.
peer/peer.go:650: main's verifier filter also hides a friend's own requests to api.iantem.io from live status. Those are small API calls against the 32 KiB / 60 s threshold (answered in a PR comment).
Pre-existing (not introduced here, worth filing): the darwin cmd/lantern build tag, and the copylocks reported in unbounded_test.go.
A pairing is connected when it moved at least 32 KiB in the last 60s,
which url-test probes and idle WebRTC slots never reach, and stays so
for a 15s linger so traffic near the threshold does not flap. Sources
either register a connection with a cumulative byte reader, sampled at
each Snapshot and at close, or add bytes as they move. Nothing is
persisted or logged.

Register and heartbeat responses may now carry pairing_short_id_sets,
the flat pairing short IDs grouped by pairing. The peer keeps a short ID
to pairing map from the newest grouped set it accepts, and resolves each
samizdat connection's short ID through it: the launch config's own ID,
or an unknown one, is the pool.
Groups are taken with a strictly newer set, as before, and also at the
revision already applied, as long as their IDs in order equal the flat
set applied there: an older server replica answers with the same set and
revision but no groups, so the first response at a revision may lack
them.
ConnectionEvent and the relay snapshot's PeerBytes gain pairing, for the

Set broflake's OnConnectionChangeInfoFunc beside OnConnectionChangeFunc.
A slot whose consumer came through a helper pairing (as the producer
checked it against its own tickets) is followed in the LiveTracker by
the slot's running byte total, and the consumer's IP is labelled with
the pairing in the snapshot's peerBytes, for the app's globe. Stopping
the widget ends every tracked slot. The pairing is never logged.

Returns {"pairings":[{"pairing_id","connected","since"}]} from the
in-memory LiveTracker; a pairing missing from it is not connected. It
lives under /helper/, so like the other helper routes it is neither
traced, annotated on the caller's span, nor logged.

Connection byte totals were read only at Snapshot, so a burst followed
by minutes in which the app did not poll was stamped with the time of
the next poll and showed the friend connected. The tracker now samples
its open connections every second on its own goroutine, which runs only
while a connection is open and exits once none is. A pairing whose
traffic has left the window goes quiet from when it left, not from the
evaluation that noticed, so a late evaluation does not add a linger.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
An accept callback could resolve its pairing, pause while Stop closed
the session's tracked connections, then resume and open one: its close
is dropped while draining, so the flow, its counter and its pairing ID
stayed in the tracker for good. Live updates now take a lock that the
session's end also holds, and carry the session's generation, which
the end advances, so a resumed callback from an ended session adds
nothing.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
The quiet time was the expiry of the last sample dropped, not of the one
whose expiry took the window below the threshold, so a pairing with a
trailing small sample read as connected past its linger. Samples now
expire oldest first, and the linger starts at the crossing.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
A stream whose short ID named no pairing when it was accepted, because
the grouped set had not arrived yet (an older replica answered register
flat), stayed unattributed for its whole life. Such streams are now
kept, by byte counter, while open, and when a new grouped set names
their short ID they are followed in the LiveTracker and their client is
labelled in the relay snapshot. The set is bounded by open connections,
emptied on close and at the session's end, under the same lock and
generation as the rest of live tracking. Resolution moved under that
lock too, so a set stored while an accept is in flight is either seen by
the accept or finds it waiting.

Attributing a stream after its accept set its IP's pairing even when a
newer stream from the same IP came after it, so a pool stream's IP could
turn into a friend's, and with several late streams map order picked the
label. The tally now remembers its latest stream's counter, and a late
attribution relabels the IP only for that stream.

Changes: Pairing-Based Live Status
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Live tracker and timing rules helper/live.go, helper/live_test.go
Adds an in-memory tracker that samples connection bytes, applies threshold and linger timing, and returns sorted pairing snapshots. Tests cover sampling, timing, cleanup, and tracker lifecycle.
Register and heartbeat responses carry pairing groups alongside flat short-ID lists. The peer client validates and applies mappings, attributes connections and relay snapshots, and updates live tracking. Tests cover mapping updates, connection lifecycle, and logging identifiers.
Unbounded connection metadata supplies pairing IDs, and slot byte totals feed live tracking. Peer-byte snapshots include pairing labels. Tests cover attribution, pool traffic, and cleanup.
Live snapshot IPC endpoint backend/radiance.go, ipc/server.go, ipc/client.go, ipc/helper_test.go, go.mod
The backend returns the default live snapshot. The IPC server serves it at GET /helper/live, and the client decodes the response. Tests verify the endpoint and response fields. Dependency versions are updated.

Leaving this as is. The bytes involved are a few trailing chunks per slot, which can't move the status: "connected" needs at least 32 KiB in a 60 s window.
What the misattribution amounts to:
After a close, the chunks still in flight for that slot are either dropped from the old friend's total or credited to whoever takes the slot next.
That's one or two relay buffers, against a 32 KiB threshold.
So it can't flip a friend to Connected, and losing it can't flip one to Not connected while real traffic is flowing.
The same holds for the final sample at stop.
What a correct fix needs: a connection generation carried through every byte delivery. broflake's ChunkFunc(size, workerIdx) passes only the slot index, so that would mean another broflake API change, then a bump through lantern-box and radiance, to perfect a label that already rounds these bytes away.
With no connection open and nobody polling, the disconnect was
evaluated late and stamped with that evaluation's time, not with when
the linger ended.

A close looked its short ID up in the current map, so once a newer set
dropped that ID (as the epoch rotates) the close lost the pairing its
accept, or a late grouped set, had attributed. The session now keeps
each open stream's pairing, which also holds the streams still waiting
for one, and its close reports it.

A newer grouped set replaced the short ID to pairing map before the
set was pushed to the inbound, so when the push failed the inbound kept
accepting the previous IDs while their streams went unattributed. The
groups now wait with the recorded set and replace the map when a push
of that set succeeds, at the apply, a heartbeat's retry, or a rotation,
which also attributes streams accepted while they waited.

New bytes are added before an expired linger is evaluated. A threshold-sized burst sampled just after the linger ends can clear quietSince and preserve the original since, even though the pairing disconnected and reconnected. Evaluate the existing window and linger before incorporating new bytes, then evaluate again; apply the same ordering in Add and the final sample at close.
Delayed samples misdate accumulated traffic as a fresh connection
helper/live.go:258
[P2] A delayed sampler can date old traffic as new. For example, if 32 KiB moves just before the device sleeps and the connection remains open, the first sample after waking minutes later stamps those bytes at wake-up and reports the friend connected for another window and linger. Capture the movement time, or handle long sampling gaps conservatively rather than assigning the entire accumulated delta to the resume time.
Wall-clock changes can extend connection windows
helper/live.go:268
Time.Truncate removes the monotonic clock reading, so the window is aged using wall time. If the device clock moves backwards by ten minutes after a 32 KiB burst, that sample appears to be in the future and keeps the friend connected for roughly ten extra minutes without traffic. Preserve each bucket's monotonic timestamp and group samples by elapsed time instead of truncating wall time.
Connections during verification bypass live status tracking
peer/peer.go:649
The box accepts streams throughout Verify, but the listener is registered only afterwards. Samizdat captures that listener once, so a friend connecting during verification can relay for the whole stream without ever contributing to live status. Register the listener and publish the successfully applied initial pairing map before serving, preserving verifier filtering and rollback cleanup.
Assert that a reused slot cannot extend the previous pairing.
The test discards the snapshot after the new occupant sends traffic. The earlier assertions do not cover this occupied-then-reused slot order, and TestBytesBeforeTheFriendAreNotTheFriends covers only traffic sent before the friend connects.
Use an injected, race-safe fake clock. Advance it past helper.LiveWindow + helper.LiveLinger before the new occupant sends bytes. Advancing after those bytes would expire both the friend's bytes and the incorrectly attributed bytes.

Groups were published only after a push of their set succeeded, so a
stream the inbound accepted on a new ID in between went unattributed,
and could end before late attribution counted any of its bytes. A
newer set's groups are now published before the push, alongside the
held ones, and withdrawn if it fails. When a push succeeds the groups
it replaced are kept until the next set replaces them, since a box a
rotation is bringing up may still serve them while a heartbeat pushes
a newer set onto the old one.
Start likewise published its groups and registered the connection
listener only after Verify, but the box serves from Start and samizdat
takes the listener once per connection, so a friend connecting during
Verify was never reported. Both now happen before the box starts; a
failed Start clears them.

…c time
Bytes were added before the pairing's state was brought up to date, so
a burst arriving just after its linger ended extended the old
connection and kept its since. State is now settled first, then the
bytes added and the state settled again, for samples, Add and the final
sample at close.
A sampler delayed past the window, as after the device slept, stamped
everything that moved meanwhile at wake-up and showed the friend
connected for another window. Bytes read after a gap longer than the
window are no longer counted.
Samples were bucketed with Time.Truncate, which drops the monotonic
reading, so a wall-clock step kept a friend connected too long. Buckets
now keep the clock reading and group by elapsed time.

The monotonic clock stops while the device sleeps, so after a sleep the
gap measured with it was one tick and the bytes that moved meanwhile
still counted. The gap is now measured on the wall clock; a backward
step counts like a tick. The window still ages on the monotonic clock.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
The sampling gap was read from now's wall reading, which tests could
only drive apart from its monotonic one by editing time.Time's
internals. The tracker now has a separate wall clock source, records
each flow's last sample on it, and keeps aging the window on now, so a
test can advance the two clocks separately.

helper/live.go:153, New traffic can revive an expired linger window: fixed in 65085ae. Each sample, Add and the final sample at close now evaluate the window and linger first, then add the bytes, then evaluate again. Test: TestLive_BurstAfterTheLingerReconnects.
helper/live.go:258, Delayed samples misdate accumulated traffic as a fresh connection: fixed in aabb94d and 836c902. Bytes read after a sampling gap longer than the window are discarded. Tests: TestLive_BytesAfterALongGapDoNotCount and TestLive_BytesAfterASleepDoNotCount. A pairing that was already connected before the sleep can still read Connected for up to one window plus the linger (75 s) after waking, and then corrects itself.
helper/live.go:268, Wall-clock changes can extend connection windows: fixed in 65085ae. Samples keep their monotonic reading and are grouped by elapsed time instead of by truncated wall time. Test: TestLive_SamplesKeepTheMonotonicClock.
peer/peer.go:649, Connections during verification bypass live status tracking: fixed in 9584430. The connection listener is registered, and the initial groups are published, before box.Start, so a connection accepted during Verify is tracked. A failed start clears both. Test: TestClient_ConnectionDuringVerifyIsTracked.
This is reached only after isVerifierConn has discarded every stream to api.iantem.io or api.staging.iantem.io, regardless of its authenticated short ID. A paired friend transferring traffic to either host is therefore never tracked or attributed, even if it exceeds the live threshold. Distinguish the verifier's base-ID traffic from paired streams before filtering, including streams whose pairing is resolved later.
Preserve replacement mappings until their IDs are reconciled
peer/peer.go:1787
During rotation, the replacement box can still serve set A while a heartbeat commits set B to the old box; a repeated B response then overwrites prevGroups and drops A's mapping. Streams accepted on A become unattributed and short-lived streams cannot be recovered; expiry also clears mappings before the replacement is reconciled (peer/peer.go:1886). Retain the replacement's mappings until its IDs are successfully reconciled, and do not retire previous groups on an unchanged response.
…d set
The live tracker's clock now adds the time the wall clock ran ahead of the
monotonic one, so a pairing connected before the device slept expires on
waking even with nothing open. A repeated response with the held groups no
longer retires the previous groups a rotation's box may still serve.

peer/peer.go:650, Track paired traffic to verifier hosts: leaving this as is.
The filter comes from main (dd1ae0a). This PR only places live tracking after it, like the existing connection events.
The only paired traffic it can hide is a friend's own requests to api.iantem.io or api.staging.iantem.io: small API calls, against a 32 KiB / 60 s threshold driven by everything else the friend relays.
Telling the verifier apart by short ID would make the people-helped filter depend on which base ID the verifier dials with, across rotations. That's a riskier change than the bytes it would recover.
peer/peer.go:1787, Preserve replacement mappings until their IDs are reconciled: fixed the repeated-response case in 0c19375. commitPendingGroupsLocked now replaces the held groups only when the pending ones differ, so an unchanged response no longer retires the previous groups a rotation's box may still serve. Tests: TestClient_RepeatedGroupsKeepThePreviousOnes, and TestClient_GroupsFollowTheStrictlyNewerRuleOtherwise now checks that an unchanged set keeps them and a different set drops them.
Not changed:
Two different new sets within one rotation: a rotation's build-to-swap takes seconds, and heartbeats are minutes apart. The swap then pushes the record to the new box anyway.
Expiry: it clears the map only for a set the server hasn't vouched for in 48 hours. That is past every short ID's validity (epochs e-1..e+1 of 24 hours), so no stream can still be using those IDs.
* Personal proxies: trust warning, helping disclosure, approval prompt
Closes three gaps between the helper-invite flow and Derek's Figma:
- The invite screen warns, under the link and QR code, that the person
invited will know the user uses Lantern and can see when they connect
through them (C3-2).
- The volunteer's claim screen opens with a "What helping a friend means"
card: encrypted traffic, the friend sees when you're online, and you
can stop at any time. It replaces the intro it repeated (U2-3).
- A claim waiting on approval now opens the code sheet on its own, over
whatever screen shows, once per claim, in the foreground, never over a
dialog or sheet and never in a stealth build. It rides the notifier's
existing poll. The banner's waiting variant also takes the Pro banner's
slot, and shows for users who already have a personal proxy (C3b-2).

* Make the personal-proxy disclosures accurate for direct sharing
Review: "They can't see what you do online" and "you can't see it" are
not true when the friend shares directly: the inviter's traffic leaves
from the friend's network, so the friend could learn which sites are
visited, though not the contents of secure (https) sites. Both texts now
say so, instead of promising privacy the friend's position doesn't give.

* Don't open anything on its own over the QR scanner
Review: the approval prompt (and user messages) could open over
QrCodeScanner, which keeps scanning under a sheet and pops itself with
the scanned code, popping the sheet's bool route with a String instead.
The scanner joins the observer's blocked routes; the prompt already
retries when the route changes.

* Personal proxies: address review on the prompt, warning and disclosure
- The approval prompt also waits while a checkout is in progress
(paymentSessionProvider) and while the loading overlay shows, the same
rules UserMessageHost follows. It looks again when the checkout ends,
and shortly after the overlay hides.
- InviteShare marks its claim as offered only while its route is
current, so a covered invite screen no longer suppresses the prompt.
- The trust warning moves above Share link / Copy link, so it is read
before sharing, even on a short screen.
- The volunteer's traffic line is now true for both sharing modes: the
friend's traffic leaves from the volunteer's network (direct) or is
relayed through Lantern's servers (WebRTC). The inviter's warning
says the traffic passes through, rather than leaves from, the
friend's connection.

* Personal proxies: approve a friend in a modal dialog
The approval sheet becomes the app's dialog: "<Name> wants to be your

which burns the invite. The automatic prompt opens the same dialog.

* Personal proxies: the server list's friends and the selected location
The VPN tab's Selected Location row shows "Your personal proxies" with
"Personal Proxy" under it and the generic icon. In the server list the
"Personal Proxies:" group keeps its group row first, then each friend
by name with Online or Offline, never a place. An offline friend is
veiled like a locked Pro location. Friend rows build their radio, but
show it only once HelperPairingView.selectable is true, which it is not
until a pairing maps to its outbound tag.

* Personal proxies: the volunteer's Action Mode card and friends sheet
The Action Mode tab shows exactly one of two cards: "Become a Personal
Proxy" before the first pairing, then "Your Personal Proxy connections"
with the number of friends. The "You're helping" section is gone; the
card opens a bottom sheet of the friends helped, each with since when
and a trash icon that asks first, "Paste another invite link", today's
data relayed, and Help others too.
HelperPairingView gains a nullable connected. While it is null nothing
says Connected or Not connected, and the card's "connected right now"
line is hidden. The globe gives up height first so the card stays above
the fold.

* Personal proxies: the Become a Personal Proxy and waiting screens
The accept screen is titled Become a Personal Proxy. Its first card says
what that means, with the decision-5 volunteer disclosure. The second
holds the invite link (filled in when a link opened the app), the name,
and Become Their Personal Proxy. The button waits for a valid link, and
a bad link, as typed or as the engine refused it, shows on the field.
QR scanning stays as a secondary action.
The waiting screen puts the code in a card with how it will be checked
and Waiting for approval, above a Note on saying it out of band.

Measured with the app's Urbanist font: the name field's person SVG grew
it to 326 px, so it takes the Material outline icon. The invite screen's
trust Note uses small type, the QR code is 112 px, and the gaps are
tighter, so its QR and waiting line no longer need a scroll.

* deps: bump radiance to #728 for per-friend live status
radiance 6207dee3b1ba adds GET /helper/live and the pairing on peer and
unbounded snapshot peerBytes. It pulls broflake, lantern-box and samizdat

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* lantern-core: merge radiance's per-friend live status into the helper view
A poller beside the relay snapshots reads GET /helper/live every second
while the VPN is connected and hands it to the helper engine. The engine
keeps it under its own lock, so a refresh waiting on lantern-cloud never
delays it, and sets helping[].connected on every view: true for a pairing
radiance reports connected, false for one it reports idle or leaves out.
Inviter rows never carry it. While radiance does not answer or the VPN is
off, the field is left out, as from an older core.
The app hears a helper-live event only when the status changes. It carries
no pairing IDs, which reach the app only in the view. Nothing is logged.
The snapshots' peerBytes[].pairing already pass through unchanged; a test
pins that for both.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: per-friend live status and named friend arcs
The volunteer's view now carries helping[].connected from lantern-core.
On a helper-live event, which carries nothing, the app reads the view
again: a local engine read, no request to lantern-cloud, and only once the
engine is unlocked. A failed read keeps the last view. The friends sheet's
Connected / Not connected and the "<name> connected right now" line on the
card and sheet already follow the field, and stay hidden while it is null
(an older core, or the VPN off).
Globe: an arc whose peer IP radiance labels with a pairing, from the
peer-connection event or either snapshot's peerBytes[].pairing, is a
friend's. It never carries a country, so the arrival pill skips it, and its
bytes count under unknown in the per-country totals. While that friend
shows as connected, the arc is drawn in the sheet's Connected green with
the friend's display name on its point. A label change redraws the arc in
place, as a replay, without an arrival burst or camera move.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* lantern-core: helper-live poll test leaves no tick for a fifth read
With a tick buffered for every read, the last select could pick the
leftover tick over the cancellation and read past the script (seen under
-race). One read precedes the first tick, so buffer one fewer.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: draw a friend's traffic exactly as pool traffic
Product ruling: no city, flag or location for a friend, ever. A named or
distinctly coloured arc ending at a friend's approximate position ties
that friend to a place, and with one friend connected so would colour
alone. This restores the globe, the arrival pill and the per-country
totals to the pre-branch code, so a friend's traffic is indistinguishable
from the pool's, and drops the friend-arc tests.
Live status stays: helping[].connected, the helper-live re-read, the
sheet rows and the connected-right-now line.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* lantern-core: keep pairing IDs out of the snapshots sent to the app
The app no longer reads peerBytes[].pairing, so both the peer and the
unbounded snapshot pollers clear it before marshalling. A test checks the
field is absent from both events. peer-connection events already forward
only state, source and timestamp, so they never carried it.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: live status whatever the VPN's state
A volunteer abroad typically shares with the VPN off, and sharing runs in
radiance apart from the tunnel, so gating connected on VPNStatus hid it
exactly where it matters. lantern-core now polls /helper/live every second
regardless: a successful read sets the status (a missing pairing is not
connected), a failed one leaves the field out. The change-only helper-live
event is unchanged.
The poll starts nothing. Desktop and Android clients fail the read when
the IPC server is down. On Apple builds the client answers from its
in-process backend, as it already does for the relay snapshot pollers at
the same rate, so no new backend lifecycle is driven by this poll.
Adds the missing test of app_event_notifier's helper-live case.

radiance d0c5d84 is #729 merged with #728. It brings lantern-box

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* lantern-core: per-friend personal proxy selection data
- The helper engine reads each inviter pairing's outbound_tag from
lantern-cloud's pairings list and puts it on the helpers view. Only a
well-formed helper tag is kept. Like online, it is memory only.
- HelperCall's personal_proxy_status op reads radiance's per-friend
{direct, rooms} status outside the engine, so it never waits on the
engine's lock. The app polls it only while the server list is open.
- radiance's personal proxy fallback events go to the app as
personal-proxy-fallback, carrying the friend's tag and the fallback.
The log line carries neither.
- A redaction test covers the personal-proxy:<tag> selection.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: select one friend as the personal proxy
- Each friend row in Private Locations gets a radio, and tapping selects
that friend alone. It goes through the same connect path as the group
row, with radiance's selection tag personal-proxy:<outbound tag>. A
friend can be selected when lantern-cloud gave their outbound tag, says
they are online, and radiance reports a live direct or rooms route.
While the VPN is off or radiance does not answer, online decides alone.
- While the tab shows friends and the app is in front, radiance's status
is read on opening and every 5 s. It is not read otherwise. ListPairings
keeps its 60 s refresh, also only while the tab shows.
- With a friend selected, the VPN tab's Selected Location and the Smart
Location card show the friend's name with "Personal Proxy" under it.
They show no flag or place. The name is looked up by tag, so it is never
stored with the location or sent to the home-screen widget.
- radiance's fallback event moves the selection to the group or to Smart
Location. The snackbar says "<name> is offline. Switched to ...", with
the generic helper name when the friend is unknown. There are two new
en.po strings for it.
- If a stored friend selection has no route at connect time, it falls
back to the group while the group exists, as radiance does, and to
Smart Location otherwise.
- The redactor and the server lists treat personal-proxy and its
selections like personal-proxies.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: keep a friend's fallback that beats the connect reply
- Codex review round 1, finding 1: radiance can withdraw a friend while
ConnectVPN is still running, and its fallback event can arrive before
the reply. The location notifier then ignored the event, since the
friend was not yet the selection, and the save that followed put the
withdrawn friend back.
- Every fallback is now recorded with a count.
- Selecting a friend takes a mark before connecting, and the save uses
saveFriendSelection. If radiance fell back from that friend after the
mark, the fallback is saved instead.
- Codex review round 1, finding 2: the status poll's first read ran inside
useEffect, during build. With the VPN off, poll set state to null before
its first await, and Riverpod refuses that during build.
- The first read now waits for the frame, and the timer is guarded for
disposal.
- The tab test runs the real status notifier with the VPN off.

* Personal proxies: redact a friend's selection in native logs
The home-screen widget and tunnel now receive personal-proxy:helper-...
tags, so the native code is brought up to the Dart and Go redactors.
- iOS and macOS:
- redactHelperTags also redacts personal-proxy.
- PacketTunnelProvider logged handleAppMessage params, which carry the
server tag, unredacted. Those lines are now redacted. The group's tag
went through them unredacted before this change too.
- When a friend has no route at tunnel start, the extension falls back
to the group while it exists, and to auto otherwise.
- The iOS widget never shows a personal proxy tag as the location
text.
- Android: HelperTags.redact also redacts personal-proxy. The logger
redacts every line through it.
- The status poll leaves an unknown status alone, rather than setting it
again to null.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: save radiance's actual selection after a friend connect
Codex review round 2, finding 1. If a friend went away before
MobileConnectToServer ran, radiance refused the selection and sent no
fallback event. The native retry then connected the group or auto, and
the app still saved the friend.
- One source of truth. lantern-core's new selected_server HelperCall op
reads the selection radiance has persisted: {"tag": ...}, with "auto"
for auto-select. It reads the settings, because radiance's
selected-server read cannot tell auto apart from the server auto
picked.
- After a friend connect succeeds, from the server list or from startVPN
with a stored friend, the app saves that answer: the friend, the group,
or auto.
- If the answer is some other server, it fetches radiance's selected
location.
- If radiance does not answer, it saves the requested friend, and a
later fallback event still moves it.
- A selection made while the read is in flight wins.
- The fallback mark and count from 8729e9b are removed. The fallback
event now only drives the snackbar and moves a friend that is already
the selection.

* Personal proxies: redact the tunnel's logged responses and Android logcat
Codex review round 2, finding 2. The respond helper in the iOS and macOS
PacketTunnelProvider logged the whole response. A PrivateServer response
says "Connected to personal-proxy:helper-...". The logged copy now goes
through redactHelperTags, and the caller still gets the original.
A grep of both Apple targets and the Android side found no other log of
request or response params. Android's LanternLogger redacted the lines it
writes to its file, but not the copy it sends to logcat. That copy is now
redacted too.

* lantern-core: read the selected server in Koanf's flattened shape too
Codex review round 3, finding 1. radiance's settings endpoint answers
with settings.GetAll(), which is Koanf's flattened All(). Once a reload
or an unrelated write has happened, the persisted server arrives as
"selected_server.tag" rather than inside a "selected_server" object.
selected_server then answered unavailable.
selectedTag now reads both shapes. The new test runs radiance's real
settings package: it persists a friend, makes an unrelated write, and
sends GetAll() through JSON as the endpoint does. It asserts the
flattened shape and reads the friend, then auto. It fails against the
previous code.

* Personal proxies: mirror radiance's selection, newest read wins
Codex review round 3, findings 2 and 3, and the step-back ruling:
radiance is the one source of truth for the selection, and the app
mirrors it.
- ServerLocationNotifier.syncSelection starts a fresh read of the
selection radiance has persisted (the selected_server op), and numbers
each read.
- Only the newest started read is applied: auto, the group, a friend, or
another server. Another server keeps the details already shown, or is
fetched from radiance.
- A failed read changes nothing.
- Every event that can change the selection starts a read:
- a connect returning, success or failure, from VpnNotifier's
connectToServer and startVPN;
- a personal-proxy-fallback event, which also still shows its
snackbar;
- a server-location event.
A friend selected from the server list saves by reading too.
- Removed: saveFriendSelection with its _selection guard, the
personalProxyFellBack follow-up, and startVPN's pending friend save. The
fallback-to-group branch no longer writes the location itself.
- Tests replace the race-specific ones:
- out-of-order read answers, where only the newest started read
applies;
- mirroring the group, a friend and auto;
- a failed read;
- fetching another server;
- a fallback during a pending connect ends on the group;
- a location metadata event while a friend is being selected ends on
the friend.

radiance now announces every saved selection: SelectionSavedEvent,
forwarded by lantern-core as selection-changed. radiance sends it once a
settings read can see the save, and again on each reconnect. The app
starts syncSelection() on every such event, keeping newest-read-wins, so
correctness no longer depends on when a connect returns or reports
connected.
- Removed: VpnNotifier's _thenSync and _syncSelection (the read on
connect-return), and the server-location event's read. The event covers
both.
- Kept: the read on a personal-proxy fallback (cheap, alongside its
snackbar), and the friend row's save step, which is a read, so nothing
writes a friend the app was not told about.
- saveOnceConnected stays. It predates this work and drives the screen's
return home for every server type.
- Tests:
- Acknowledged before the switch: the read after the connect sees A,
then selection-changed reads B, and B is shown. This runs through the
real event notifier and the real location notifier, and fails without
the fix.
- Each selection-changed event starts one read.
- Duplicate events do not flap the selection.
- A Lantern server the screen saved keeps its details.

* Personal proxies: re-show a friend picked again after auto
The already-selected shortcut matched the tag alone; switchToAuto keeps
the last serverName, so friend, auto, same friend stayed on auto.

* Android: redact a logged throwable and its causes, in logcat too
Copilot review finding 1. LanternLogger.w and LanternLogger.e passed the
original throwable to Log.w and Log.e. Logcat then printed the exception
and cause messages unredacted, so a helper tag from a failed connect
could reach it.
The message and the throwable's stack trace, with every cause, are now
rendered into one text by HelperTags.redactWithThrowable, and redacted.
That text goes to logcat without the throwable, and the same text goes
to the file. The file copy was already redacted.
HelperTagsTest.redactsAThrowableAndItsCauses passes. It was compiled and
run with the Kotlin compiler embedded in Gradle 8.14.3, with JUnit
4.13.2 and android.jar.

* Personal proxies: deliver every core event, and read state when listening
Copilot review finding 2.
- Android: FlutterEventStream used MutableLiveData.postValue, which
coalesces. A snapshot could replace a selection-changed or helper-live
event before Flutter saw it.
- It is now an EventQueue, which posts each event to the main thread
on its own, in order, with no coalescing and no sticky replay.
- EventHandler listens to it directly.
- EventQueueTest passes. It was compiled and run as for HelperTagsTest.
- iOS and macOS were already fine. FlutterEventListener dispatches each
event with its own DispatchQueue.main.async, and buffers events until
the sink attaches.
- App: radiance replays its selection-saved event to the core, not to a
late app listener. So once the app's event listener is installed,
AppEventNotifier waits for the core (at most 30 s), then reads the
selection once and the helper live status once. The startup state no
longer depends on catching the replay.
- Tests:
- A late listener that missed every event still ends on radiance's
selection. This fails without the fix.
- A selection event followed at once by snapshots still reads.
- The existing event tests now account for the one read made when
the listener starts.

* Personal proxies: show radiance's selection after every row's connect, and no early events for late listeners
The group and private-server rows saved the row they asked for once
connected. If radiance replaced it during the connect and its
selection-changed event arrived first, that save overwrote the fallback.
Every row on this screen now shows what radiance saved, as friend rows did.
EventQueue read its listeners when a delivery ran, so a listener attached
between an emit and its delivery heard an event from before it attached. It
now delivers to the listeners attached at the emit that are still attached.
Adds notifier-level tests for the friend status reads: a disconnect during a
read, a failed read clearing live status, and overlapping polls.

* Android: snapshot event listeners atomically
toList reads a one-element list's size and then its element, so a listener
removed in between threw inside a gomobile callback. ArrayList copies through
toArray, a single read of the CopyOnWriteArrayList.

* Personal proxies: keep friends' tags and online state through a disabled or incomplete listing
dropVolunteerSide cleared every tag and online value though the pairings
where this device is helped stay, so friend rows lost their outbound tag
until the next refresh. It now leaves them. A pairings answer with a blank
pairing_id keeps the local pairings, and now also keeps what the last list
said of the ones it did not name.

* Personal proxies: ordered emits, country on listen, accurate fallback copy and widget label
EventQueue.emit is synchronized, so two concurrent emits post in the order
they took the lock.
A late app listener misses the country-code event, which is sent only after a
config fetch; it now reads country_code from the settings when it starts
listening.
radiance falls back when it cannot route through the selected friend, who may
still show as online, so the message no longer says they are offline.
The iOS tunnel's fallback to auto clears the widget's stored location, which
still named the personal proxy and showed ahead of the auto label.

* Personal proxies: save the row asked for before reading radiance, plain Smart Location card, status reads per connection
A row's save writes the location asked for, then reads radiance's selection,
so a failed read shows what the VPN was asked to use and a fallback still
wins when the read succeeds.
With a friend selected, the Smart Location card shows the generic Smart
Location choice its tap switches to, not the friend.
A friend-status read that spans a disconnect and reconnect is discarded.

* Personal proxies: a country-code event wins over an older settings read
The settings read made when the listener starts could answer after a newer
country-code event and replace its country with an older one, which could let
sharing start on its own in a censored country. Country-code events are
counted, and a read that one overtook is dropped.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: a selection radiance confirmed during the connect is not overwritten
The save after a connect wrote the row asked for unconditionally, so a
fallback a selection-changed read had already shown was replaced by the friend,
and a failed read after it left the friend shown. ServerLocationNotifier counts
the reads of radiance's selection it applies; the save writes the requested
row only if none landed since the tap, then reads radiance as before.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KqE58aYaai3u8CFZe5nXdE
* Personal proxies: confirmations count only from reads after the tap, and auto forgets the server
A read of radiance's selection already in flight when a row was tapped could
land during the connect and count as radiance confirming a selection, so the
row asked for was never saved. Only a read started after the save began now
counts.
switchToAuto kept the previous server's name, so the private-server list could
still highlight it. It now clears it, as its doc says.

The volunteer's app can now show each friend it proxies for (each Personal Proxy pairing) as Connected or Not connected. radiance works this out in memory and serves it at a new
GET /helper/live.Why
In the Personal Proxies redesign, the volunteer sees "Connected / Not connected" for each friend. Snapshots also carry each connection's pairing, but the app strips it before the globe sees it, so the globe never singles out a friend. To make this work:
This PR puts those together.
