The paper describes a novel mechanism for identifying evolving knowledge in unstructured corpus and constructing a Q&A test set to evaluate whether a language model answers questions using knowledge that was current at a specified point in time. This repository contains the resulting dataset (evolveQA). The public release contains six knowledge cutoff dates, making it suitable for testing a range of LLMs with varying cutoffs and training periods.
This release contains two complementary datasets:
| Directory | Contents | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
raw-public-data/ |
Publicly available source documents and updates for AWS, Azure, and WHO Disease Outbreak News. | The input from which our framework automatically identified evolving knowledge. |
evolveQA-benchmark/ |
The resulting EvolveQA question-answering benchmark, organized by domain and knowledge cutoff. | The evaluation dataset for testing LLMs on the identified evolving knowledge. |
In short, raw-public-data/ is the raw source data, while evolveQA-benchmark/ is the obtained benchmark derived from it. Users who want to inspect the underlying knowledge changes should start with the raw data; users who want to evaluate models should use the benchmark.
The benchmark covers three domains in separate directories:
| Directory | Domain | Questions |
|---|---|---|
evolveQA-benchmark/aws/ |
AWS product and service updates | 2,960 |
evolveQA-benchmark/azure/ |
Azure product and service updates | 1,092 |
evolveQA-benchmark/who/ |
WHO Disease Outbreak News | 915 |
There are 4,967 question records across the three domains. Counts include a record once per knowledge cutoff, so the same question identifier can occur in more than one cutoff file.
Each domain provides one JSON file for each of the following six dates:
- August 31, 2023 (
qa_pairs_August_31_2023.json) - December 31, 2023 (
qa_pairs_December_31_2023.json) - April 30, 2024 (
qa_pairs_April_30_2024.json) - May 31, 2024 (
qa_pairs_May_31_2024.json) - July 31, 2024 (
qa_pairs_July_31_2024.json) - August 31, 2024 (
qa_pairs_August_31_2024.json)
For example, evolveQA-benchmark/aws/qa_pairs_April_30_2024.json should be used to test a model whose accessible knowledge is restricted to April 30, 2024 or earlier.
Every file is a JSON array. Each element is a question record with this schema:
{
"question_id": "...",
"recent_answer_date": "MM/DD/YYYY",
"entity_name": "...",
"concept_name": "...",
"attribute_name": "...",
"different_qa_variants": {
"open_ended_qa": { "question": "...", "gold_answer": "..." },
"mcq_variant": {
"mcq_question": "...",
"options": { "A": "...", "B": "...", "C": "...", "D": "..." },
"gold_answer_option": "..."
},
"verifiable_qa": { "yes": "...", "no": "..." }
}
}recent_answer_date is the date when the most recent information associated with the evolving knowledge surfaced. Dates use MM/DD/YYYY format.
The entity_name, concept_name, and attribute_name fields provide the grounding for each question: the entity under discussion, its broader concept, and the specific changing attribute, respectively.
different_qa_variants contains the available evaluation formats:
open_ended_qaprovides a question and its gold answer.mcq_variantprovides a multiple-choice question, its options, and the correct option label.verifiable_qaprovides a statement-style question for whichyesis the true formulation andnois the false formulation.

question = record["different_qa_variants"]["open_ended_qa"]
print(record["entity_name"], question["question"], question["gold_answer"])- This dataset is released under the CC-BY-NC-ND-4.0 license. See LICENSE for the full terms.
